📰 Omar Blames Trump Rhetoric for Rising Threats to Her Safety
Minneapolis, Minnesota — U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar has publicly accused former President Donald Trump of fostering what she describes as a climate of “hateful rhetoric,” which she says has placed her at increased personal risk.
Speaking to reporters following a recent town hall incident where she was sprayed with apple-cider vinegar by an attendee, Omar linked the attack to broader political rhetoric that she argues normalizes hostility toward public officials, particularly women and people of color.
“When leaders use language that dehumanizes or targets communities, it creates an environment where violence becomes more likely,” Omar said. “That kind of rhetoric has consequences.”
Omar pointed directly to Trump’s past statements and political messaging, claiming they have emboldened individuals who harbor extremist or hateful views. She emphasized that while disagreement is a fundamental part of democracy, intimidation and violence are not.
The former president has not directly responded to Omar’s comments. However, Trump and his allies have repeatedly rejected accusations that his rhetoric incites violence, arguing that responsibility lies solely with individuals who commit criminal acts.
The incident and Omar’s remarks have reignited national debate over political discourse in the United States, as attacks and threats against elected officials continue to rise. Lawmakers from both parties have voiced concern about escalating tensions and the safety of public servants.
Despite the incident, Omar has reiterated that she will not be silenced.
“I will continue to show up, speak out, and do the work I was elected to do,” she said. “Fear will not win.”
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the town hall attack, while advocacy groups and political leaders renew calls for calmer, more responsible rhetoric across the political spectrum.
